Combat boots have been worn by military members since the early 1800s. The first recorded time that combat boots were worn by the US military was in the War of 1812. During this time, US military rifle units wore calf-high boots. In 1820, soldiers began wearing ankle-high boots that were created using a straight last, and this type of combat boot was the norm until shortly before the American Civil War.
Early Combat Boots weren’t made for the Right or Left Foot
Interestingly, early combat boots weren’t made for either the right foot or the left foot. Instead, the boots simply molded themselves to the wearer’s feet over time. As a result, soldiers were often very uncomfortable in their boots and even suffered from blisters and other painful foot conditions.
Jefferson Davis Boots changed the Way Combat Boots were Made
In the 1850, Jefferson Davis, the Secretary of War at the time, recognized that soldiers were suffering with uncomfortable boots. As a result, Davis revised combat boots with a new version that was known as Jeff Davis boots. This type of work boot was worn by the US Army until the 1880s.
Post 1900 Combat Boots
After 1900, combat boot technology began to change rapidly in the United States. In 1917, the US military opted for a trench boot, and then switched to black combat boots in the late 1950s. For hot weather climates, Marines began to trade in the traditional black combat boots for tan, cowhide boots that were healthier to wear in extremely hot weather conditions. In 2002, the US Army also began to switch to tan, rough-out boots.
